WASHINGTON - Researchers have found a way to measure the temperature of the dinosaurs, and their temperatures were almost identical to humans, by studying dinosaur teeth that can reflect the body temperature.
In accordance with the arrangement and shape of its teeth, scientists know that the long-necked dinosaur Brachiosaurus has a temperature of 38.2 degrees centigrade and Camarasaurus a smaller stature has a temperature of about 36.8 degrees centigrade.Apparently, they are nearly the same temperature with a man who had an average of 37 degrees C. Similarly, as quoted by The Straits Times, (Friday, 24/06/2011).
The discovery was immediately reported online in the journal Science. It does not take the time to debate whether dinasaurus modern warm-blooded like mammals or coldblooded like a lizard. When they were first discovered, there is a theory which states that they are sluggish and cold-blooded, but in recent years, consensus has been moved and said that dinosaurs were more toward warm-blooded, allowing them to become more active, such as the Velociraptors in Jurassic Park.
"Our analysis enables us completely rule out the theory that they are cold-blooded like a crocodile," said lead investigator Robert A. Eagle, of the California Institute of Technology.
"This does not mean dinosaurs have a high metabolism like mammals and birds, they have 'gigantotherms and keep warm because they are so big," he added
Meanwhile, Thomas Tuetken from the University of Bonn states that a body mass of the giant animals are very good in keeping the temperature constant.
The researchers explain that the animal that has a great body can maintain its body heat even with a relatively low metabolism.
Branchiosaurus weighs 36 tons, while the Camarasaurus have a lighter weight is 13.6 tons. Both allegedly lived approximately 150 million years ago.
